Time Duration Calculator

Find the elapsed duration between a start time and an end time using 24-hour clock values. When the end time is earlier than the start time, it is treated as the following day, which is useful for overnight shifts and travel windows. The result appears as hours and minutes and as total minutes. Equal start and end times produce zero elapsed minutes. This calculation does not account for a date, timezone, daylight-saving clock change or an unpaid break.

How it is calculated

Enter the start and end readings in 24-hour HH:MM format.

If the end clock time is earlier, the calculator treats it as the next day.

Review elapsed hours, minutes and total minutes; subtract breaks separately if needed.

Formula

Elapsed minutes: (end clock minutes − start clock minutes) modulo 1,440

Hours and minutes: whole hours = total minutes ÷ 60; minutes = remainder

Frequently asked questions

Does this handle daylight-saving changes?

No. It compares clock readings on a simple 24-hour day and does not know the date or timezone. A clock-change shift can have a different actual elapsed time.

What does an identical start and end time mean?

It is interpreted as zero duration. Enter dates or a separate full-day option if you mean a 24-hour interval.
