PPF Maturity Calculator

Find the PPF final amount after the standard 15-year period.

How it is calculated

Uses the same annual-compounding PPF formula, fixed at the standard 15-year lock-in.

Formula

Maturity: Annual compounding over 15 years

What is the PPF Maturity Calculator?

A PPF account matures after its initial fifteen-year term, and you can then extend it in blocks of five years. This calculator is built around that structure. It accepts a term of fifteen years or more and shows the balance at maturity, so you can compare closing the account at fifteen years with extending it to twenty, twenty-five or longer.

The decision at maturity is a common one for middle-aged investors. A government employee who opened a PPF at thirty is forty-five when it first matures and may not need the money yet. The calculator answers: what will my account be worth at the end of this term, and how much extra does each five-year extension add if I keep contributing?

How to calculate it by hand

1. Decide the yearly contribution C, the assumed rate r and the total term n in years, which is 15 or more.

2. Treat each year the same way: balance = (previous balance + C) × (1 + r ÷ 100).

3. Repeat this step n times, starting from zero.

4. The final balance is the maturity amount. The closed form is C × (1 + i) × ((1 + i)^n − 1) ÷ i, with i = r ÷ 100.

5. Find total invested as C × n and interest as maturity − C × n.

6. To see the value of an extension, run the calculation for 15 years and for 20 years and compare the two maturities.

Why the last years add the most

Compound growth is back-loaded. In the first years, most of the balance is your own money. By year fifteen, the balance is several times the yearly contribution, and one year's interest on that balance can exceed the contribution itself. Each five-year extension therefore adds more interest than the previous five years did. This is why many advisers suggest extending PPF with contributions if you can, since the account is at its most productive stage just when it first matures.

Extension with and without contributions

At maturity you can extend with fresh contributions or without them. This calculator models extension with contributions, since the same C is added every year for the whole term. If you extend without contributions, the balance simply compounds: maturity at 15 years × (1 + i)^5 for a five-year block. Extension without contributions still earns tax-free interest, but it allows easier withdrawals. The choice is made through a form at the post office or bank, within the time the rules allow.

The EEE tax status

PPF is described as exempt-exempt-exempt. Contributions qualify for a deduction under the old regime, interest is not taxed, and the maturity amount is not taxed. That makes the maturity figure here a post-tax number, unlike FD or RD maturity values, which will be reduced by tax. When you compare PPF with a taxable product, compare PPF's rate with the other product's rate after tax at your slab, not with its headline rate.

Worked example, step by step

Vikram opened a PPF at 32 and deposits the full ₹1,50,000 each April. He is deciding whether to extend it once by five years, making the total term 20 years, at an assumed 7.1%.

Answer: Maturity amount ₹66,58,288; Interest earned ₹36,58,288

Common mistakes to avoid

Letting the account mature without filing the extension request and then continuing to deposit, which can leave later deposits without interest.

Assuming a PPF can be extended for any number of years at once. Extensions come in five-year blocks.

Comparing PPF maturity with a taxable FD's pre-tax maturity.

Using the fifteen-year figure when you plan to extend, and so underestimating the final corpus.

Where it is used

Deciding whether to close or extend a PPF at first maturity.

Estimating the tax-free corpus available for retirement.

Planning a large future expense such as a child's wedding or house down payment.

Showing a young saver how much longer horizons multiply the final amount.
