EPS Pension Calculator

Find your monthly pension under the Employee Pension Scheme (EPS).

How it is calculated

EPFO's own formula for EPS pension, using your capped pensionable salary and years of service.

Formula

Monthly pension: Pensionable salary × pensionable service ÷ 70

What is the EPS Pension Calculator?

The EPS pension calculator estimates the monthly pension you would receive from the Employees' Pension Scheme, 1995. Part of your employer's PF contribution goes into this scheme instead of your EPF account. You do not build a pot of money; instead, you earn a right to a monthly pension based on your salary and your years of service. The calculator uses EPFO's formula: pensionable salary × pensionable service ÷ 70.

EPS matters because it is one of the few defined-benefit pensions available to private-sector employees in India. Many members never check what it will pay, because their passbook shows the pension contribution without any balance. This tool answers that gap in a line: at a given salary and service, what monthly amount will EPFO pay from the pension age?

How to calculate it by hand

1. Find your pensionable salary: the average monthly pay (basic plus DA) over the last 60 months before exit, capped at the wage ceiling of ₹15,000 for ordinary members.

2. Count your pensionable service in years across all employers, as long as the service is linked through the same UAN or scheme certificate.

3. Check eligibility: a monthly pension usually needs at least 10 years of pensionable service.

4. Monthly pension = Pensionable salary × Pensionable service ÷ 70.

5. If you plan to draw pension before the normal pension age, expect a reduced amount under EPFO's early pension rules.

Why the divisor is 70

The formula gives one-seventieth of pensionable salary for each year of service. Thirty-five years of service therefore earns half of pensionable salary, since 35 ÷ 70 = 0.5. The divisor is a design choice in the scheme, balancing what the pension fund can afford from the fixed contribution rate. It also means the pension grows linearly with service. Each extra year adds the same amount, which is why long, continuous membership matters more for EPS than for EPF.

The ₹15,000 ceiling and higher pension

Employer contributions to EPS are 8.33% of wages up to the ₹15,000 wage ceiling, so ordinary members contribute a maximum of about ₹1,250 a month. The pension formula uses the same capped salary. That is why this calculator caps pensionable salary at ₹15,000. Members who jointly opted with their employer to contribute on actual wages above the ceiling may have a higher pensionable salary under separate EPFO rules. Their pension can be higher, but it needs EPFO's specific calculation, not this simple cap.

What the formula does not include

EPS adds a small service weightage for members with long service, which this calculator does not add. A government-notified minimum monthly pension may lift very small pensions. Early pension before the normal age is reduced for each year taken early, and deferring can increase it. Family pension for a spouse and children is a separate benefit. Service below 10 years usually gives a withdrawal benefit instead of a monthly pension. Treat the output as the core entitlement, and confirm the final figure with EPFO.

Worked example, step by step

Lakshmi has worked 28 years across two companies in Coimbatore, with service linked through one UAN, and her pay has been above the wage ceiling throughout, so her pensionable salary is ₹15,000.

Answer: Estimated monthly pension ₹6,000

Common mistakes to avoid

Using actual basic salary above ₹15,000 when the member never opted for pension on higher wages.

Counting service with an old employer whose PF was withdrawn and not transferred, which breaks pensionable service.

Expecting a lump sum; EPS pays a monthly pension, not a balance you can withdraw at retirement.

Forgetting that pensionable salary is an average over the last 60 months, not the final month's pay.

Where it is used

Estimating the pension component of retirement income alongside EPF and other savings.

Deciding whether to transfer an old PF account instead of withdrawing it.

Understanding what the employer's 8.33% EPS share actually buys.

Planning the age at which to start drawing pension.

Frequently asked questions

Why is pensionable salary capped at ₹15,000?

EPS contributions are worked out on wages up to a fixed limit, currently ₹15,000, no matter what your actual basic salary is. This also caps your pension calculation.
