Diesel Cost Calculator

Find diesel cost for a trip.

How it is calculated

Same calculation as the general fuel cost calculator, using current diesel prices.

Formula

Cost: (Distance ÷ mileage) × diesel price

What is the Diesel Cost Calculator?

The diesel cost calculator estimates the diesel spend for a journey or a period of use. It follows the same distance, mileage and price logic as other fuel calculators, with defaults suited to a diesel car, which usually returns more kilometres per litre than a petrol car of similar size.

Diesel powers most trucks, buses, tractors and many SUVs and taxis in India, so the calculator is widely useful beyond private cars. Transporters use it to price a load, taxi operators to set outstation fares, farmers to budget tractor trips to the mandi, and SUV owners to plan road trips. It also helps when comparing a diesel vehicle with a petrol or CNG one, because the real question is cost per kilometre, not price per litre.

How to calculate it by hand

1. Note the distance of the trip or the period in kilometres.

2. Use the vehicle's real diesel mileage in km per litre, loaded or unloaded as appropriate.

3. Litres of diesel = Distance ÷ Mileage.

4. Check the local diesel price per litre.

5. Diesel cost = Litres × Price.

6. To compare with another fuel, divide each fuel's price by its mileage to get cost per km.

Why diesel engines go further per litre

Diesel engines compress air far more tightly than petrol engines before fuel is injected, and higher compression lets an engine turn more of the fuel's heat into work. Diesel also packs a little more energy into each litre than petrol. Together these usually give a diesel vehicle better km per litre than a similar petrol one, especially on highways and under load. The calculator does not assume this; it simply uses the mileage you enter.

Comparing diesel and petrol fairly

Price per litre alone misleads. The fair measure is cost per kilometre, which is fuel price divided by mileage. A diesel SUV at ₹90 a litre and 16 km/l costs about ₹5.6 per km, while a petrol version at ₹104 and 12 km/l costs about ₹8.7 per km. Diesel vehicles often cost more to buy, so the running-cost saving has to be weighed against the higher purchase price and your yearly distance.

Load and speed matter more for heavy vehicles

For trucks, buses and tractors, mileage depends heavily on load, gradient and speed. A loaded truck may return noticeably fewer km per litre than when running empty, and aerodynamic drag rises sharply with speed. Operators therefore keep separate mileage figures for loaded and empty legs. When using the calculator for commercial work, run it separately for each leg with its own mileage and add the results.

Worked example, step by step

Gurpreet drives his diesel SUV 640 km from Chandigarh to Manali and back, averaging 16 km per litre in the hills, with diesel at ₹90.40 a litre.

Answer: Diesel cost ₹3,616

Common mistakes to avoid

Comparing diesel and petrol by price per litre instead of cost per km.

Using an unloaded mileage figure for a loaded truck or a fully packed SUV.

Ignoring the lower mileage on steep ghat roads and in stop-go city traffic.

Forgetting that commercial trips often include an empty return leg that still burns diesel.

Where it is used

Pricing a truck or tempo load between two towns.

Setting outstation taxi fares that cover fuel.

Budgeting SUV road trips and hill-station drives.

Estimating tractor or farm vehicle fuel costs for a season.

Frequently asked questions

Why is diesel mileage usually higher than petrol?

Diesel engines are usually more fuel-efficient than petrol engines of a similar size, which is why they usually give a higher km/litre figure.
