Date Difference Calculator

Compare a start date with an end date to see a calendar difference in years, months and days, plus the total number of elapsed days. The calculator validates calendar dates, including leap years, and requires the end date to be on or after the start. Calendar differences are counted as complete years, then complete months, then remaining days; total elapsed days excludes the start date. This makes the result useful for planning timelines, but inclusive counting conventions can differ by task.

How it is calculated

Choose the start and end dates using the date fields.

Confirm the end date is not earlier than the start date.

Read both the calendar breakdown and total elapsed-day count.

Formula

Calendar difference: Complete calendar years, then months, then remaining days

Elapsed days: End date − start date

Frequently asked questions

Is the start date included in total days?

No. Total elapsed days counts the difference between the dates, so the start date is not counted as an additional full day.

Are leap years handled?

Yes. The calculator validates real calendar dates and uses the actual number of days in each year and month.
