CGPA to Percentage Calculator

Admission forms, job applications and scholarship portals often ask for a percentage even when your marksheet only shows a CGPA. This calculator converts a CGPA or SGPA into a percentage using the rule your board or university actually publishes. Choose the CBSE 9.5 multiplier, the (CGPA − 0.75) × 10 rule used by many engineering universities, a simple ×10, or enter your institution's own multiplier.

How it is calculated

Enter your CGPA or SGPA.

Pick the conversion rule your board or university uses.

Copy the equivalent percentage into your form.

Formula

CBSE: Percentage = CGPA × 9.5

Many universities: Percentage = (CGPA − 0.75) × 10

What is the CGPA to Percentage Calculator?

Marksheets from CBSE and most Indian universities now report a CGPA on a 10-point scale, but many forms still ask for a percentage: job portals, PSU applications, scholarship schemes, foreign university applications and some entrance exams. This calculator converts a CGPA or SGPA to a percentage using the rule your institution publishes.

There is no single national conversion. CBSE's indicative rule multiplies by 9.5. Many universities, especially technical ones, use (CGPA − 0.75) × 10. Some simply multiply by 10, and a few publish their own multiplier. The calculator offers all of these and keeps the answer between 0% and 100%.

The question it answers is narrow but important: what percentage should I write on this form so that it matches what my board or university would certify?

How to calculate it by hand

1. Find your final CGPA (or the SGPA you need to convert) on the marksheet.

2. Check your marksheet, grade card reverse side or university regulations for the official conversion rule.

3. For the CBSE rule, compute percentage = CGPA × 9.5.

4. For the university rule, compute percentage = (CGPA − 0.75) × 10.

5. For a simple rule, compute percentage = CGPA × 10; for a custom rule, multiply by the stated factor.

6. If the result is above 100 or below 0, cap it at that limit.

7. Write the percentage with the rule name if the form allows, for example '76% (CGPA × 9.5)'.

Why CBSE chose 9.5

Under grading, a CGPA is an average of grade points, and each grade point covers a band of marks. CBSE looked at the actual marks of students in its top band and found their average was close to 95, so it declared a grade point of 10 roughly equivalent to 95%, and more generally each grade point to 9.5 marks. That ratio was then applied across the scale. The result is an indicative average, not a recovery of your real marks, which cannot be reconstructed from grade points once they have been rounded into bands.

The (CGPA − 0.75) × 10 rule

Several technical universities publish percentage = (CGPA − 0.75) × 10. It has the same slope as ×10 but shifts every value down by 7.5 percentage points. The logic is that a grade point typically represents a band whose lower edge is below the grade point times ten, so pure ×10 overstates marks. The two rules cross nowhere in the useful range: at CGPA 8, ×9.5 gives 76% and the shifted rule 72.5%; at CGPA 9.5 they give 90.25% and 87.5%. Choosing the wrong rule can therefore change the answer by several points.

When a conversion is not accepted

A converted percentage is an equivalence, not a mark. Recruiters and universities abroad usually ask for the rule to be stated, and some insist on a certificate from the university showing the official equivalent. For eligibility cut-offs such as '60% in graduation', always use the university's rule, since using a more generous one can lead to rejection at document verification. If your university gives no rule, the ×10 figure is often accepted with a note, but check with the examination branch.

Worked example, step by step

Nikhil finished his B.Tech with a CGPA of 7.8, and his university's grade card says to use (CGPA − 0.75) × 10 for percentage. He is filling a PSU application that asks for his aggregate percentage.

Apply your institution's rule: (7.8 − 0.75) × 10 = 70.5%

Keep within 0–100%: Percentage = 70.5%

Answer: Equivalent percentage 70.5%

Common mistakes to avoid

Using CBSE's 9.5 rule for a university degree that publishes its own formula.

Converting each semester's SGPA and averaging the percentages instead of converting the final CGPA.

Rounding up the percentage to meet a cut-off such as 60%, which can fail document checks.

Converting a CGPA on a 4-point or 7-point scale with a rule meant for 10-point CGPAs.

Where it is used

Filling job and PSU applications that ask for a percentage.

Checking eligibility for scholarships and postgraduate admissions with percentage cut-offs.

Preparing documents for study abroad applications that ask for the conversion rule.

Comparing results from boards and universities that use different grading systems.

Frequently asked questions

Is CGPA × 9.5 valid for every university?

No. 9.5 is the CBSE indicative multiplier. Universities publish their own rules, so check your degree regulations or ask the examination office.

What percentage is a CGPA of 8?

Using CBSE's rule it is 8 × 9.5 = 76%. Using the (CGPA − 0.75) × 10 rule it is 72.5%.
